The honest answer to “how did you build all this?” is unglamorous: sleep, walking, journaling, two-hour deep-work blocks. Five habits so unfashionable that nobody who asks really wants to hear them. They compounded into 60+ voice credits, five companies, and a music career. Here they are.
1. Eight hours of sleep, non-negotiable
The most tedious productivity advice in the world is also the most consequential. Every late night I’ve pulled in 12 years has cost more downstream than it gained. I don’t pull all-nighters anymore. The work that needed all-nighters either gets descoped or gets owned by a teammate. Sleep is the highest-ROI investment available, and almost free.
2. Walking, every single day
An hour outside, no phone, no podcast. Started as a productivity hack; turned into the most important creative tool I have. The best song ideas, the best business decisions, the best clarifications about hard people problems all happened on walks. The pattern is reliable enough that I now build walks into my calendar like meetings.
3. Daily journaling
Three pages, longhand, every morning before email. Not gratitude journaling, not goal-setting — thinking on paper. The journal is where my brain and I have honest conversations. Most of the issues that would have eaten my day get caught and resolved in the journal. Pairs naturally with reading practice.
4. Two-hour deep-work blocks, twice a day
Not eight straight hours. Two blocks of two hours. Morning block (10–12) and afternoon block (3–5). Phone in another room, focus app on, single task. The four hours of real deep work consistently outperform 10 hours of distracted work. Block tracking enforces it.
5. Sunday off, fully
One day a week, no work. No email. No “quick check.” Family, books, walks, music for fun, food cooked slowly. The instinct early in my career was to work seven days; the math turned out to be backwards. Six days of deliberate work consistently outperforms seven days of grinding work.
What these habits aren’t
They aren’t sexy. They aren’t hacks. They aren’t productivity-influencer content. They’re the unfashionable basics, run consistently, for a decade. The unfair advantage is in the boredom of doing them daily when most people only do them inconsistently.
The principle
Outcomes are downstream of inputs. The inputs are the boring ones. Most of what looks like talent or luck is just consistent application of unsexy fundamentals. The career is built in the habits people don’t post about.
What I tell younger me
You’re not going to discover a hack. The basics are the hack. Run them daily, for a decade, while everyone else is chasing tactics. The compound result is staggering and almost nobody is willing to do it.
